Harvey Relief

A Message from Pastor Tom

Friends,

As we feel the urge and wonder about “how to help” – let us remember the three steps in response to a natural disaster:

  • Rescue – depending on the area, underway or done
  • Relief – underway and requiring a large amount of funding
  • Recovery – probably a month away and the point at which donated goods may be helpful

My experience in Seguin – and with previous hurricanes – is that the most helpful thing at this point is funding. Donated goods create a strain on the system and require personnel and funds for sorting and storage. Right now, they are a drain and a hindrance, not a help.

Additionally – we do not have available space to tie up space with the storage of a large amount of donated goods. Let’s stay in touch with ADRN about needs and coordinate with them as well as the annual conference. ADRN already has several locations set up to receive donations of specific items. Please see their website through the link on the “Hurricane Harvey Relief” page of our website. (below)

Bishop Schnase’s letter was well written and I am providing it to the congregation. Let’s engage this in a helpful manner. Instead of a knee-jerk reaction based on what we think needs to be done, let’s listen to the pros and seek input from the communities. There will be a time for volunteer teams. I am particularly thinking of Palacios as we have built a relationship with that community over the last ten years. Our staff is already reaching out to that community.

Finally, be in prayer. Like many of you, I have family and friends who have been impacted. I am thankful that injuries have been few among my circle. I am deeply saddened by the news of others who have suffered great injury or the loss of loved ones. Having been through several such storms, I am also acutely aware of the emotional trauma of such an event. Do not underestimate the power of prayer to lift up our brothers and sisters as they work through these days. I can testify, from personal experience, how powerful it is to be held in prayer as you struggle through such times.

Be Blessed!
Tom Deviney
