The Music of Christmas
Each year at Christmas time Bethany UMC offers many wonderful opportunities to celebrate the birth of Christ through music. This year is no exception and promises many wonderful music/worship experiences including the following:
HANGING OF THE GREENS Sunday, November 30, 6:00 PM Come Celebrate the beginning of the Advent season. Come sing traditional Christmas carols while learning the symbolic meaning of our sanctuary decorations as they are hung during this special worship service, followed by congregational decorating of the Chrismon trees. Bring a dessert (with recipe) to share to Fellowship Hall before the services, and stay afterwards to share in the feast. |
Come enjoy an afternoon of Christmas and holiday favorites presented by various Bethany musical groups including: the Bethany Orchestra, All God’s People Chimes, PURE SOUND, JuBELLation, Journeymen, Hallelujah Ringers, Grace Notes and Bethany Bells. This is the perfect time to invite your friends to visit Bethany. |
The Chancel Choir, Bethany Orchestra, PURE SOUND and Bethany Bells will present How Great Our Joy! a cantata by Lloyd Larson and Douglas Wagner directed by Curt Olson, with narration by Pam Mitchell and Grant Kail. Joy is a pervading theme throughout the Bible. In the midst of Old Testament Israel’s despair was the eternal promise of joy. How Great Our Joy! presents the Christmas message in a fresh and powerful blending of familiar carols with new texts and tunes. It recaps the miracle of God becoming human and dwelling among us. How Great Our Joy! is truly a joyous worship experience that will touch hearts and enrich your Christmas celebration. |

CHRISTMAS CAROLING IN THE CAFÉ With Jimmy Johnson and friends Saturday, December 13, 8:00 PM FREE! All ages welcome! Visit the Live Nativity and then come on in the Cafe for Caroling, Cocoa, and Christmas Cheer! |
CHRISTMAS CAROLING With the Youth Sunday, December 21, 5:30 - 8:00 PM The youth of Bethany invite everyone to join them in caroling at several nursing homes. This is a wonderful way to spread the joy of Christ’s birth. After the caroling, return to BUMC for a chili supper and fellowship time. |

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a worship service celebrating the birth of Jesus. The format was conceived by E. W. Benson, later Archbishop of Canterbury, for Christmas Eve 1880 in Truro, England. In 1918 it was adapted for the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, by its Dean, Eric Milner-White. The service weaves together scripture and song in a progression that carries us from prophecy to fulfillment, from Old Testament foretelling to a birthday celebration. While this festival of Nine Lessons and Carols has been edited for United Methodist congregations, a version of this service is used in many different church denominations around the world. Join us for this special worship celebration. |
