2008 United Methodist Dollars for Scholars Program
The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation will provide a $1,000 matching scholarship for 475 churches that raise and provide $1,000 on behalf of student members enrolled or planning to enroll in a United Methodist-related college, university, or seminary in the fall of 2008. Students attending United Methodist-related institutions not participating in the
Triple Your Dollars component of the United Methodist Dollars for Scholars program will receive a total award of $2,000. These schools are listed as Double Your Dollars participants.Triple Your Dollars for Scholars
Students attending United Methodist-related institutions that have agreed to participate in the
Triple Your Dollars component of the United Methodist Dollars for Scholars program will receive $1,000 in matching funds from the school for a total award of $3,000. These schools are listed as Triple Your Dollars participants. Recipients should contact their institution’s financial aid office for specific information about how their matching award will be granted. Quadruple Your Dollars for ScholarsUnder the
Quadruple Your Dollars component of the United Methodist Dollars for Scholars program, participating United Methodist conference foundations will provide an additional $1,000 match to recipients sponsored by churches in their respective conferences, bringing the total award to $4,000. These foundations reserve the right to restrict the number of matching awards available. Recipients must be attending a Triple Your Dollars participating institution to be eligible for the Quadruple match; other restrictions may apply per conference foundation. Southwest Texas Conference Scholarship Award
Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry Scholarship Committee
The Southwest Texas Annual Conference Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry (BHECM) administers one financial aid program offered by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. This program is a rebate in the form of a $500 - $1,000 Merit Award given annually by the Conference Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry. The amount awarded each year will be based on the Annual Conference’s response to the United Methodist Student Day Offering for the previous year. High-school seniors through college seniors are eligible to submit a BHECM application to compete for the program.
Application Guidelines from the SWTX BHECM and the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry are as follows:
1. Awards are only given to United Methodist students who are or will be attending institutions of higher education recognized as United Methodist by the University Senate. It shall not be required that the institution be within the bounds of the annual conference from which the award originates. 2. Awards are for “merit," but it should be understood that merit can be in terms of Academic Scholarship, Church Involvement, Financial Need, Special Vocational Preparation for Ministry, or other service - or a combination of these factors, as may be determined by the annual conference board.
3. An applicant for a Scholarship Award shall be nominated by a local church (pastor and/or Administrative Council).
a. Nominations shall be sent to the Scholarship Committee of the Conference Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry on an official form (see BHECM Scholarship Application).
b. A local church may nominate
no more than one student annually.c. Included with the application shall be a statement from the sponsoring church pastor and/or other church official describing the student's involvement in church, school, community or other organizations, and why the nominee merits this special recognition.
4. Awards shall be made by the annual conference board on the basis of an academic year.
5. Awards shall be made to the student as a part of that student's or his/her parents' contribution to the cost of education. The annual conference board shall consult with the director of financial aid of the institution to ensure that the award payment is made in a way so as not to displace any other aid to which the student may be entitled.
Additional Guidelines set by the Conference Board of Higher Education & Campus Ministry are as follows:
1.
The award is limited to full-time, undergraduate students enrolled in or admitted to United Methodist related institutions.2. The award will be presented at Annual Conference as part of the report of the Board.
3. The deadline for nominations to be received is
